1 April 2018 - Sugary Beverages Levy Implementation
The Sugary Beverages Levy (SBL) is a new Health Promotion Levy in support of the Department of Health’s deliverables to decrease diabetes, obesity and other related diseases in South Africa. SBL was announced by the Minister of Finance in the February 2016 National Budget and is part of the Rates and Monetary Amounts and Revenue Laws Amendment Act, 2017.? SBL will be administered and collected by SARS. SBL will be implemented with effect from 1 April 2018. For more information, see our SBL webpage.
26 January 2018 - International Customs Day
26 January 2018 was International Customs Day (ICD), a day celebrated on 26 January every year to honour the men and women who protect our borders and help facilitate trade. The theme for 2018, which was chosen by the World Customs Organisation (WCO), was "A Secure business environment for economic development”. The event?was celebrated by SARS Customs at the newly refurbished State Warehouse in Cape Town, with the SARS Commissioner, Tom Moyane, delivering the keynote address.

Highlight the request Customs may make to a client to lodge formal clearance and the guidance for clients to refer to the prohibition and restricted list before importing or exporting goods.
Include the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act and appeals against decision.
In the event the goods or parcels have been stopped or detained, SAPO informs the sender or recipient of the outcome of inspection as well as the conditions or terms that must be met.?
